There are many medically sound reasons to have a hysterectomy, but every Houston OBGYN has to deal with the occasional request for unsound reasons. Most women go in for this procedure only at the advice of a doctor, but then there are women who actually want to have the procedure. Following are just three reasons you should not consider a hysterectomy:
1. I’m not using these parts anymore, so might as well get rid of them!
You may very well be done having babies, but that is no reason to go through with a hysterectomy. If your body does not need the procedure, then there is no need to put your body through the pain of surgery and recovery. There are also hysterectomy risks which you shouldn’t take unless it is necessary.
You may not need your uterus or ovaries, but if they aren’t hurting anything they should be left alone. They are a natural part of your body for a reason.
2. I’m tired of having my period!
No woman enjoys this time of the month, but you shouldn’t go to the extreme of removing body parts to avoid it. It might be better to just look forward to menopause.
3. Uterine and ovarian cancer run in my family. I would rather remove the parts then suffer through that.
Cancer is scary, but a hysterectomy is a treatment for known cases rather than a preventative measure.
