Abnormal bleeding and inconsistent menstrual cycles may be what first lead women to see their Houston OBGYN, but the in many cases the diagnosis they walk out with is PCOS. This stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and is a medical condition that doesn’t have a cure right now.
Most women with PCOS will have abnormal bleeding that comes with a dysfunctional menstrual cycle. They can also suffer from severe acne, excessive weight gain, and male pattern baldness. Many suffer from infertility as well.
Women who do not take necessary steps to get diagnosed and control the condition can suffer severe medical problems including an increased risk of heart disease.
As of today, there is no way for a woman to completely get rid of PCOS. Doctors typically help women control their body weight and regulate their periods so they feel as normal as possible. There may be some things a doctor can do to take control of a woman’s hormones to improve a lot of the symptoms of the disorder. Yet, they will still be considered a sufferer of PCOS.
With treatment and control, many women will go on to have children while others may be unable to conceive. Controlling weight is a major factor in living comfortably with PCOS.
