Women don’t always visit their Houston OBGYN with questions about themselves. They often seek medical advice on how to talk to their daughters about the expected (or dreaded?) first period. Many mothers had no warning about these things from their own mothers, so they don’t know when to approach their daughters or what to say. Following are some tips to help mothers out.
#1: Approach in a casual way in a bonding moment.
If you sit her down for a formal conversation and bring up the subject of periods, breasts and pubic hair, you aren’t going to get a warm response. Many girls are sensitive on these subjects, so create a bonding moment where you are doing things together then bring it up casually.
#2: You don’t have to discuss everything at once.
You can bring up the fact that she may experience her period soon in one conversation and then bring up the signs that her period may be coming and what she should expect in another conversation. Don’t overwhelm her with too much information at once.
#3: Don’t do all of the talking.
You may be surprised how open your daughter is and how many questions she wants to ask you. You have to leave some quiet moments to allow her a chance to formulate the questions and guide the conversation.
