The Depo Provera shot is just one tool that your Houston OBGYN has to help patients prevent unwanted pregnancies. This form of birth control comes in shot form and must be taken every three months on a strict schedule to remain effective. One late shot could leave an opening where a woman could potentially become pregnant.
While it is incredibly convenient to have a shot every few months to prevent pregnancy, there are some side effects that make many women uncomfortable on this form of birth control. One of the side effects some women struggle with is abnormal period cycles. While the pill and other forms of birth control allow routine periods to continue, there can be disruption or a complete stop to the cycle with the shot.
What many women don’t realize is that the periods will often normalize and other side effects will often stop after six to nine months of continuous use. Women who continue to take the shots for that period of time will often find that they live quite comfortably on the shot.
In some cases, hormone therapies or the birth control pills can be prescribed by a doctor to help with the irregular bleeding that comes with the shot.
