Houston OBGYN |15 Self Exams Every Woman Should Know – What Your Nails Tell You

One of the most underrated parts of the body that women fail to check regularly is their fingernails. Sure, a lot of women love having manicures, but did you know that there are more things you should be concerned about apart from the shape of your nails?
If you notice a change in the appearance of your nails take a close look. Through careful examination, your nail beds can present traces of underlying systemic diseases. Most diseases will have other symptoms and not just show up as a change in the nail appearance.

Lines can be indicative of something more serious. Here are some things to look out for:

· Dark blue lines – these can signify melanoma, a kind of skin cancer that if not treated early can result to very serious complications
· Black lines – these may indicate a heart disease
· Red or brown lines – these show possible infection from raw food, especially pork
· Pitting of nail surface-psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis

If you see these dark lines on your nail beds, it is best to consult your family doctor or dermatologist. To care for your nail beds, regularly apply hand creams, trim them regularly, and drink lots of water.
